Have had some thinking to do about this, but changes are afoot, and I couldn’t possibly not be there for the fun!
The president, the ministry, Randall Arauz from Pretoma (organized the rallies in Costa Rica) and myself will be sitting down to a public press conference after the first screening of Sharkwater in San Jose, Costa Rica; the nation’s capital, now home to 3 story Sharkwater billboards…..
I’ve got bodyguards, a camera crew, and the mission I started over 5 years ago coming full circle.
So, we’ve got one of the biggest motion picture distributors in Costa Rica distributing Sharkwater in a big way.
They want me there for the PR tour, for interviews, for talks, and to push the film and the movement. The government will give me bodyguards (mafia) though I’m not entirely sure they won’t arrest me. They really want me there, and for once, we have some power in Costa Rica to make a change and force the issue into the spotlight.
My parents really really really don’t want me to go….
But a big part of me wants to go back.
What do you think?
I’ve had the pleasure of hanging out and doing a press conference with one of the century’s hottest sex symbols turned activist - Bo Derek. We met in Miami on a panel discussion press conference on trade in endangered species. Bo also came to the Sharkwater screening at the Santa Barbara Ocean Film Festival (we won “best of the festival” - award 22). What an inspiring woman. It’s so incredible to see someone who could do absolutely anything with her life/money; turn towards saving species and ecosystems.
She was moved into action by one of my favorite conservation groups - Wildaid - wildaid.org - upon meeting Peter Knights, a mutual friend and one of Wildaid’s spokesperson and founder.
Wildaid is attacking the shark finning issue from the demand side - the most important side. As long as there is a demand, there could be 10,000 patrol boats, but there would still be finning.
They’re such a great organization they’ve managed to garner spokespeople such as Yao Ming, Jackie Chan, and of course Bo Derek.

If shark fin soup has a chance of becoming “tacky” in time and for the Chinese Olympics, Wildaid is our only hope, and they’ve got a chance. Give them all the help you can.

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who supported the film in Florida. You were all so incredibly passionate about the cause and the film that it literally gave the whole team new life.

It’s 5 AM and we’re on the way to a TV interview. Sharkwater hits theaters today on more screens in Florida than any documentary before it. It’s really exciting as the press and public response has been amazing. We need all the help we can get though, so please spread the word. Tell your friends to go see Sharkwater please! We’re battling films with 40 million dollar marketing budgets, and are definitely the underdog. Word of mouth, and people that are moved by the plight of sharks and humans on earth is what’s going to make this film fly. Awareness is simply the most important issue facing the oceans today. If we had even a fraction of North America aware of the issues facing the oceans, everything could change in an instant.
Sharkwater above being a film, is a way to deliver a message to the public - to educate, awaken, and enroll people so we have the support to turn around the fate of sharks, just as we’ve turned around the situation for the whales.
I’m going to be at the Cobb Dolphin theater for the Friday night showing at 7 PM for a question and answer. I’ll also be at the Muvico Paradise Saturday night, so please come out and join the movement!
Our PR tour took us to Daytona Beach, just north of New Smyrna Beach, the shark bite capital of the world. We spent hours in the ocean before heading to the boat show in Tampa. Kids are really responding to the film, and everyone seems really on board with the “save the sharks” campaign. I thought we’d receive some resistance, but the movement continues!!
Sharkwater’s PR team, including Tyler MacLeod, Mike Schram, Veruschka Matchett, and myself are departing for Florida to start the US pr tour. Sharkwater hits theaters in Florida September 28th, and nationally November 2. We’re really excited about the US release after breaking box office records in Canada. Our first stop is Gainesville and Daytona Beach!
